CancerCareTech: A pilot study on a digital platform for multimodal clinical data integration in pediatric oncology
2026-06-17 - Correia, Pedro; Dias, Joana; Morais, Alexandra; Sagarribay, Amets; Ferreira, Ana Isabel; Londral, Ana Rita; Quintão, Carla; Santos, Catarina; Pires, Mafalda; Santos, Patricia; Agulheiro , Paula; Quaresma, Cláudia
Pediatric brain cancer often causes long-term impairments, highlight-ing the need for effective rehabilitation to support functional recovery and social reintegration. The aim of this study was to co-create, develop, and pre-validate the first CancerCareTech prototype, designed to enable a practical, objective, and data-driven assessment and visualization of patient functional status and rehabilitation outcomes.Implemented using the Python Dash framework, CancerCareTech plat-form supports structured clinical data acquisition, monitoring, and sharing, inte-grating multimodal biosignals, including electroencephalography, electromyog-raphy, and electrodermal activity. A pilot technical pre-validation conducted with a four-month-old infant confirmed usability, and reliable integration and visu-alization of clinical and electrophysiological data. CancerCareTech features an innovative, human-centered design aligned with national and European cancer strategies, demonstrating strong potential to support data-driven clinical decision-making, enhance neurorehabilitation outcomes, and improve quality of life in pediatric oncology, pending validation in future clinical studies.

Stability of electrophysiological signals: Findings from preliminary measurements in different clinical environments
2026-06-17 - Ferreira, Ana Isabel; Quaresma, Cláudia; Quintão, Carla
Electrophysiological signals reflect the electrical activity of cells and tissues. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) provide insight into the functional integrity of the visual system and are generally stable across laboratory conditions. In contrast, electrodermal activity (EDA), an index of sympathetic nervous system activity, remains comparatively underexplored. This preliminary study assessed the temporal stability of VEP and EDA measures across two clinical settings. VEP latencies at the Oz, PO7 and PO8 electrodes were consistent across settings. For EDA, latency and phasic driver parameters remained stable over a three-month period. However, the number of skin conductance responses and the area only varied as a function of time of day, with the tonic component additionally influenced by recording location and day. Overall, these findings indicate differential stability across electrophysiological measures and recording conditions. Larger-scale studies are required to support robust statistical inferences and enhance generalizability. Notwithstanding, the present study confirms the stability of VEPs while highlighting the need for caution in the longitudinal interpretation of EDA measures, particularly the mean tonic component. Notably, time of day emerged as the factor influencing the greatest number of EDA parameters; therefore, standardization of the recording period is recommended in future studies.

Towards a poetics of the female body: Attention and technical mediation in salette Tavares’s ‘Mechanical Ball’ (1956)
2026 - Dias, Sandra
This article presents a study of “Baile Mecânico” (Mechanical Ball), a text by Salette Tavares written in 1956 and unpublished until 2019. It is an experimental piece conceived for film and deals with the relations of domination between the female body and the clinical control of motherhood. The plot is narrated from the point of view of a camera that focuses on the physical and symbolic confrontation between the vulnerable but living female body and the militarised environment in a hospital setting. The parodic and poetic deconstruction that runs through Salette Tavares’s work, also through the camera lens that emphasizes a dual gaze, focused on experience rather than on the object, can be read as a form of attention and care for this body, observed here from the perspective of a poetics of the senses which, taking it into its vital and transgressive nature, restores its human dignity.
